Timpani Mallets
There are several kinds of timpani mallets. The timpanist needs at least three pairs of mallets. With these three sets of mallets, the timpanist should be able to play any part.
The timpani's handle is typically made from hickory wood. The felt on the playing end is usually piano felt.
Each mallets is designed to produce a particular sound. The softest mallet has the ability to produce a light articulation with little head contact sound. The hardest mallet will produce a more percussive staccato sound.
The mallets require maintenance as well. Once you are finished playing, the mallets should be returned to the sleeves they were originally sold with.
