Timpani Strokes: The Legato Stroke
The legato stroke is the most basic stroke for the timpani. With this stroke you are going to follow the natural rebound of the drum. There should be no interference of the drum's natural motion. Be sure there is no tension in your grip.
The legato stroke uses all the hinges in your arm (fingers, wrists, elbow, shoulder).
This stroke is best used for notes with longer values such as whole notes, half notes, and quarter notes.
